Wood dining table and chair set on display at Gavigan's furniture showroom in Maryland

Choosing the Right Dining Table Size and Shape

Measure your dining room before you shop for shape: round and square tables suit rooms under 12 feet wide, while rectangular tables make better use of long, narrow rooms and can seat more guests along the sides. Leave at least 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall so chairs can slide out freely — our measuring your furniture guide has a full room-by-room checklist to run through before ordering.

If nothing on the floor is quite the right size, Canadel's design-your-own program lets you specify table length, leaf options, wood species, and finish, so a table can be built to fit an oddly shaped dining room or an extra-long farmhouse look. John Thomas offers a similar build-to-order approach for a more rustic, distressed-wood aesthetic.

Solid Wood Care and Finishing Your Dining Room

Solid wood dining tables from Kincaid and Riverside expand and contract slightly with Maryland's humidity swings between summer and winter — that's normal, not a defect. Our wood furniture tips guide explains how to use coasters, trivets, and tablecloths during dry winter months to prevent cracking, and how to buff out light scratches without refinishing the whole piece.

Once the table is set, china cabinets, sideboards, and servers add storage for linens and stemware while balancing the room visually — pair a lower, wide server with a tall dining table for the best proportions. Ask about matching finishes across our Canadel UDesign custom dining program so your table, chairs, and storage pieces read as one coordinated set rather than mismatched furniture bought over time.

Answers

Dining Room Questions, Answered

What size dining table seats six people?

A rectangular table roughly 72 inches long, or a 54-inch round, comfortably seats six. Allow 24 inches of table edge per person.

How much clearance do I need around a dining table?

Plan on 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so chairs pull out freely; 42 to 48 inches if people walk behind seated guests.

Round or rectangular — which works better in a small dining room?

Round and square tables handle rooms under 12 feet wide better because there are no corners to walk around. Rectangular tables suit long, narrow rooms.

Can I customize a Canadel table?

Yes. Canadel lets you choose shape, size, leaf configuration, wood species, finish, and chair style. See our Canadel page for how the program works.

Do dining chairs come in different heights?

Yes — standard dining (18" seat), counter (24"), and bar (30"). Measure from the floor to the underside of your table or island apron before choosing.

How do I protect a wood dining table from heat and moisture?

Use felt-backed pads under serving dishes and wipe spills immediately. Our wood furniture tips guide covers finish care in detail.
