Bedroom Furniture

Gavigan's Home Furnishings has furnished Maryland bedrooms since 1980 from six showrooms in Bel Air, Catonsville, Frederick, Glen Burnie, Towson, and Westminster. As Maryland's largest family-owned furniture retailer, we stock platform, panel, sleigh, poster, and storage beds alongside dressers, chests, and nightstands from Kincaid, Vaughan-Bassett, Hooker, and Riverside, in sizes from twin through California king. Complete bedroom sets pair a bed, dresser, mirror, and nightstand in matching finishes, or mix pieces individually to fit your space. Delivery includes setup, though our team does not move or remove existing furniture, including old mattresses and box springs, and financing is available through the Gavigan's credit card issued by Wells Fargo, on approved credit, so a full room can be furnished in one visit.

Woven panel bed with matching dresser, mirror, and nightstands in a light oak bedroom set at Gavigan's in Maryland

Choosing a Bed Style and the Right Size

Bed style affects more than looks: platform beds sit lower and skip the box spring, panel beds offer a clean traditional headboard, sleigh beds add a curved statement footboard, and storage beds build drawers into the base — useful in bedrooms without a walk-in closet. Poster beds work best in rooms with at least 9-foot ceilings so the posts don't overwhelm the space.

Before choosing a size, measure your room and mark out the bed's footprint with tape, leaving at least 24-30 inches on each side for walking room and dresser access; our measuring your furniture guide covers exact clearances for California king and other oversized frames. Complete sets from Vaughan-Bassett and Kincaid keep bed, dresser, mirror, and nightstand finishes matched, which is the easiest way to furnish a whole room without piecing it together over multiple trips.

Storage, Wood Care, and Safety in the Bedroom

If closet space is tight, a storage bed with built-in drawers or a dresser with deep bottom drawers can replace a chest of drawers entirely — pair a six-drawer dresser with a nightstand from the same Vaughan-Bassett or Liberty bedroom group seen in our showrooms for matching hardware and finish. Solid wood pieces from Riverside and Vaughan-Bassett should be dusted with a dry or slightly damp cloth; see our wood furniture tips guide for advice on avoiding sun fading and humidity-related warping.

Bunk and loft-style bedroom furniture, along with any bed with drawers a child might climb, should be anchored to the wall — our furniture safety tips guide covers anti-tip anchoring for dressers and chests, which is especially important in households with young children. Once your furniture is chosen, delivery includes assembly of headboards and footboards, and a six-month in-home service window covers any adjustments needed after move-in.

Answers

Bedroom Questions, Answered

What are the standard bed sizes and dimensions?

Twin is 38" x 75", full 54" x 75", queen 60" x 80", king 76" x 80", and California king 72" x 84". Bring your room measurements and we will map clearances with you in the showroom.

Do I need a box spring with a platform bed?

No. Platform and bookcase-platform frames such as Ironmill support the mattress directly. Panel beds with slats spaced wider than three inches usually need a foundation.

What is the difference between a panel bed and a storage bed?

A panel bed is a headboard, footboard, and rails; a storage bed adds drawers built into the footboard or side rails, which is useful in older Maryland homes with small closets.

How much space should I leave around a queen bed?

Aim for at least 24 inches of walking room on each side and at the foot. Our measuring guide covers doorway and stair clearances for headboards.

Are your dressers anchored during delivery?

Yes. Our delivery crews install the included tip-restraint hardware on tip-prone dressers and chests as part of standard setup.

Can I buy bedroom pieces individually instead of as a set?

Yes, every group on the floor can be split — bed only, dresser and mirror only, or a nightstand pair. Ask an associate to check availability by piece.
